The Best Freeware Download Sites – The Safe Software Sites You Can Trust

Everyone loves freeware. However, you should know that some free software download sites can be dangerous. Visit one of the many fake or cam sites, and you could be downloading malware and viruses. At best, this is going to slow down your computer. The worst case is that you lose sensitive information such as financial info to thieves and hackers. I’ve always believed that good browsing habits beat even the best anti-virus software regarding keeping you and your PC safe online. That’s why we are looking at the best freeware download sites that you can trust.

We are using some online tools to check the reputation and safety of these sites. You can do this yourself. We are checking with “Web of Trust”, “McAfee SiteAdvisot” and “URLVoid”. Only sites with the best ratings will be in our list of the best sites.

Ninite.com

If you have a new PC or have wiped your hard drive, Ninite is one of the best sites for quickly downloading and installing all your favourite freeware programs.

The website presents you with a large list of programs you can select to download in one go. These are organised under headings such as “security”, “utilities”, “file sharing”, “documents”, “imaging”, “runtimes”, “developer tools” and “media”. In fact, I would go as far as to say that this is one of the most useful sites you could ever know about. All the freeware they have is high quality and the best in its category.

Checking the various boxes creates a custom installer file for you that bundles all the programs neatly together into one download. You can install them all in one go, as a bulk install, saving you time and effort.

It also serves for me as a quick reminder of software that I will need for a new computer.

Ninite is known for being very safe. That’s why you don’t have to worry about junk-ware or bloatware when downloading from them.

The best thing – run this same installer file at a later date, and it automatically updates all your programs.

The Ninite site is considered “Safe” by SitAadvisor, has a 94% rating on WOT Trustworthiness and has a URLVoid rating of 24/25.

Ninite is a lifesaver if you know about it, and certainly one of the best freeware download sites that I am happy to share with you today.

MajorGeeks.com

MajorGeeks has a little bit of an old-school website design. Don’t let that put you off though. Some of the best websites built by computer nerds are like this.

Over the last two decades, MajorGeeks has earned its reputation as one of the most reliable and reputable software download sites. We just had to include it on our list.

Their list of the Top Freeware Picks is certainly worth reviewing. You can also browse the side-bar to find freeware from a range of different categories including Games.

MajorGeeks scores an impressive 25/25 with the URLVoid rating and has a WOT Trustworthiness rating of 93%. SiteAdvisor classifies MajorGeeks as “safe”.

Softpedia.com

This is by far the largest file host on the web, with over 850,000 files available here to download. Softpedia is updated daily, giving you clean programs safe from malware. They also have an easy to use interface, making it simple to browse for programs and drivers that you need.

Softpedia is one of the best freeware download sites. They let you download for a range of platforms including iOS, Android, Windows Mobile, Linux, Mac and Windows.

It has a 25/25 rating with URLVoid, a 93% trustworthiness score with WOT and is considered safe by SiteAdvisor.

FileHippo.com

While hippos are one of the most dangerous animals on the planet, FileHippo is one of the safest and best freeware download sites.

You can browse through over 20, 000 active programs in 16 different categories. There are freeware programs available for all the major platforms including Mac and Windows. I find the “popular” tab is useful for figuring out which programs are the most useful.

FileHippo has a useful Update Checker program which you can download. It scans your PC and finds out which need to be updated. I find that this is one of the easiest ways to make sure all your freeware is consistently up to date.

WOT gives FileHippo at trustworthiness rating of 93%. It also has a URLVoid rating of 24/25 and SiteAdvisor considers it to be “Safe”.

FilePuma.com

FilePuma is similar to FileHippo not just in name! They are almost identical websites, with FilePuma being a little better organised. I don’t know which came first. All I know is that they are both among the best freeware download sites on the internet today.

FilePuma also has excellent safety ratings across the board. This includes a URLVoid rating of 25/25 and WOT Trustworthiness rating of 91% and a “Safe” from SiteAdvisor. Excellent.

FileHorse.com

If you are not a fan of hippos or pumas, but more of an equine persuasion, then head on over to FileHorse.

They don’t have the largest selection of freeware available. Instead, what they have focused on is quality. They have only the best and most useful freeware programs, helping you narrow down your search for software that will help rather than hinder.

I also find that it is a great resource for finding alternatives to popular programs that are beginning to suffer from a little bit of bloat.

Programs are like people in that respect; they often begin to take on a little bloat around middle age unless their owners are careful.

FileHorse has high safety ratings all around. URLVoid gives them a 24/25; WOT rates them a 91% for Trustworthiness and SiteAdvisor has deemed them safe.
