Tokyo Ghoul episode 9 opens with a flashback of Amon. He is joining Control Division One and looks noticeably younger. Special Investigator Arima welcomes him in person and seems to be important in some way. He places Amon under Mado, and the officers around them make it sound like a tough break. Mado comes to greet him and looks slightly less crazy than usual.
Tokyo Ghoul Episode 9: Birdcage
For his first assignment, Mado tells him about a ghoul that he has been tracking called “Applehead.” It had killed over fifty people that year. Mado retrieves a picture of an old woman who may be the culprit. Amon is surprised, but Mado reminds him that ghouls get old, too. Also, she is the only person that frequents the crime scene. Even though there is no hard physical evidence, Mado says that his instincts tell him that he is right. He has used this explanation in previous episodes, only this time, Amon is hearing it for the first time, and is skeptical.
When they go to visit her, she notices that Amon is there this time, meaning that they have met before. Mado then produces a doctor’s certificate proving that she is not a ghoul based on certain chemical levels in her body. He apologizes and leaves. Out of earshot, Amon expresses his annoyance that the certificate was kept a secret, but Mado replies that such documents are easy to fake. In time, he says, she will give herself away. Then he asks to see Amon’s Quinque, but Amon refuses out of frustration and professionalism. As he walks away, he wonders about Mado’s qualifications
Ghoul in Sheep’s Clothing
Amon happens to see the old lady walking home alone in episode 9 and offers to help her carry her things. As they enter a concealed tunnel, he notices that the cart she was pushing is very heavy, and he is impressed by her strength. That’s when he also notices blood dripping out of the cracks and finally realizes what’s going on. The old lady turns on him and attacks. He blocks with his Quinque briefcase which causes it to malfunction and not open. Right before the old lady strikes, Mado cuts off her head with his own weapon and tells Amon that his inexperience was part of the plan.
This is the quickly fabricated moment where Amon learns to trust Mado. Mado tells him that he admires his passion and to fight without backing down.
In the present, forty nine days after Mado’s death, Amon runs into Shinohara on his way to visit Mado’s grave. Shinohara tells him that Mado was proud of him, and that what he wanted to say could wait until later.
The Parrot, Loser
While working at Anteiku in Tokyo Ghoul episode 9, Kaneki runs into Hinami and Yomo on their way out to buy a home for their pet parrot Loser, who calls itself Loser and says it is a cat. Hinami is wearing a disguise consisting of a black wig, a face mask, and glasses. While living with Touka, Hinami slowly returned to her usual self while nursing the parrot back to health after it ran into the sliding glass door of their porch. After they leave, Touka tells Kaneki that she doesn’t want a bird living in their place.
During their walk, Yomo and Hinami pass the place where her mom died. It brings tears to Hinami’s eyes but Yomo takes her hand and they move on.
At the Anteiku shop, Touka drops a cup and saucer and then gets into an argument with Nishio. One of their co-workers tries to break it up to maintain a hospitable atmosphere, and Kaneki cleans up the mess.
Amon visits Mado’s grave and regrets not being able to help keep him alive. He swears to avenge him by killing Touka (the Rabbit, to them). On his way out of the graveyard, he notices a blonde woman walking in.
Rize Rize Rize
At Itori’s bar, episode 9 brings up Rize’s memory yet again. Kaneki tries to explain that Rize somehow controls him at times and that he doesn’t remember what happens during those times. Itori notes that Kaneki pierced Yomo’s body, which is an impressive feat. Since he believes that Itori knew a lot about her, Kaneki goes to her for more information. Unfortunately, she doesn’t know much aside from the fact that Rize appeared out of the blue and comes from the 11th Ward.
On his way home, Kaneki runs into an odd young person with white hair and stitches all over his body. He notices that the person smells really good, and also that he was pick-pocketed. He tells Hide this at the cafe and Hide reveals a depth of insight into ghouls and their activities. Because there are fewer predatory cases in the 20th Ward and because the Gourmet and the binge eater were taken down so quickly, he surmises that the ghouls in the 20th Ward are working together. Kaneki worries about his knowledge but is relieved to hear that he gets most of his information from a popular book about them. However, when he leaves, the look on his face hints at something more.
Tokyo Ghoul episode 9 introduces some new characters. Amon welcomes two new investigators, Houji, who he had met before, and Takizawa.
At Anteiku, the employees talk about possible trouble coming to the 20th Ward, possibly even a war of some kind. On the other hand, Touka is still lamenting over killing Mado, who was married. She has a quick flashback about her lost family before Hinami comes in. Kaneki notices that she has a new haircut which Touka happened to do.
At the end of Tokyo Ghoul episode 9, several characters converge on the 20th Ward to find Rize. Most of them are ghouls, but one of them is Jason. Among the ghouls is Ayato, Touka’s little brother from her flashback. Instead of the small, delicate boy he once was, he is now strong and violent.
